Decoded: Hair Transplant
Hair transplant is the latest fashion, not only for those who have lost their hair and fall prematurely, but also for those who wish to alter their lines or acquire an attractive mane. But are hair transplants really safe and successful? Is it a lasting process or does this procedure result in unwarranted tissue changes in the body?
Steps for hair transplant
It is a surgical process that consists of removing the hair follicles from any part of the body such as the face or legs and planting them in the hairless part. This process is also used in the transplant of hair in eyelashes and eyebrows. The latest techniques are permanent and collect follicular clusters of hair. This process is called follicular hair transplantation (FUT, for its acronym in English), which can be done in two ways: extraction of the strip and extraction of the follicular unit (FUE).
In the collection of strips, strips of skin with good hair growth are planted in bald areas and in the extraction of follicular units, the hair bunches with their roots are manually removed and planted in the hairless place.
The harvest of the strip is what surgeons are adopting especially nowadays. Leaves a thin scar on the donor site and promises recovery within two weeks.
FUE can be done in one or several configurations. It is a manual process and takes time, but gives very natural results and leaves no marks. However, it is not a cost-effective process and it is time consuming for both the doctor and the patient. However, the use of robotics has reduced time in this process and has greatly simplified it.
Here are the steps:
Preparation for the hair transplant
In the initial step of hair transplant surgery, the hair follicles on the back of the head are removed and relocated in the areas of baldness.
Donor area trimmed
Before beginning the surgery, the hair is trimmed in the area of the donor.
Donor area prepared for surgery.
Once the hair is trimmed in the donor area, local anesthesia is administered.
The tissue was removed from the donor area and the donor area was sutured.
The tissue in the donor area that contains the hair follicles resistant to baldness is then surgically removed and the donor area is sutured.
Hair styling over the donated area sutured.
The sutures in the donor area are hidden from the patient’s hair that is combed over them. These sutures are removed almost ten days after the hair transplant surgery.
Donor tissue trimmed in follicular unit grafts.
Then, the surgical technicians use the microscopes to see the tissue of the donor to dissect and prepare follicular units for hair grafts.
Prepared bald area
Once the patient receives local anesthesia, the baldness container area is ready for the surgical process. No cutting / removal of hair is required in the upper part of the receiver area.
Incisions made in the areas of baldness.
Follicular unit grafts are placed in small incisions that are performed in an irregular pattern in the recipient’s area.
Grafts placed according to their densities.
The smaller grafts (one and two) are placed in front of the hairline and three and four (denser than one and two) are placed behind.
Immediately after the hair transplant surgery
After the hair transplant surgery, small incisions with short hair could be seen in the area operated by the patients.
Closure of the hair transplant surgery.
The incision marks heal naturally and the redness in the recipient’s area fades within a week.
Hair transplantation is a non-invasive procedure and is performed on an outpatient basis several times. Most patients can wash themselves with shampoo after two or three days, although the scalp should be protected from the sun and infections for a while after surgery. Patients usually receive antibiotics for a few days.
You should know facts about hair transplant:
1) The transplanted hair behaves like natural hair and it is detached from two to four weeks of transplant. The roots thereafter begin to sprout naturally and continue to do so throughout life.
2) The use of local anesthesia makes it a painless procedure and the patient can go home the same day.
3) Hair transplantation is different from non-surgical hair restoration in which a preselected base is fixed on the scalp with dexterity.
4) Hair transplantation does not mean that you will have a luxurious haircut, as the result varies from person to person and also has some link with the quality of a person’s natural hair.
5) All cases of baldness have no solution in hair transplantation. It depends entirely on case by case.
6) The cost of the procedure depends on the number of grafts. The greater the number of grafts, the higher the cost.
